With CBSE class X11 results out, college admission season is heating up. While some of you maybe very sure about which college and course you want to pursue, there are still a large number of students who are not very confident what they want to do.

While applying to as many colleges and courses is a safe bet as you can't predict the cutoffs, but you must know what the course is all about, its syllabus, career prospects and eligibility.

In order to help you make informed choices, Learnhub will profile the popular courses in Delhi University.

1) B. Com (Hons)

Eligibility: 10+2 (preferable a commerce student)

Course duration: 3 Years

Course details: Financial Accounting, Micro Economics (I), Business Statistics, Business Law, Corporate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Macro Economics, Indian Economics and Corporate Tax Planning.

Career prospects: After completing your graduation, a student can join any private or government organisation as a specialist in any of the streams of commerce, such as economics, accountancy or work as management executive, accounts executive, junior accountant or pursue a career in auditing or banking. After completion of B.Com one should go for MBA or M.Com whatever he/she likes

Career options: Investment banker, forensic accounting, banking, insurance, taxation, capital market, stock broker, chartered accountancy, financial analyst, and company secretary.

2) Economics Hons

Eligibility: 10 +2

Course duration: 3 Yrs

Course overview: Principal of Economics, Mathemetical Method for Eco, Statistical Method for Eco, micro economics, macro economics, public finance, economic policy and maths.

Career prospects and job opportunities: The employment options open to those who specialise in economics are manifold. To begin with, government enterprises, public undertakings, banks, finance and investment firms, business journals and newspapers and the private sector throw up many avenues of employment in various departments.

The Indian Economics Services are also an excellent option open to those who want to join government service. Officers are recruited through examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Another highly lucrative avenue open to those looking for government employment is the Reserve Bank of India. Written tests are conducted by the RBI for the purpose. Prospects for economists are good in all sectors of the economy. The economies of the world are growing in unison and most are growing rapidly and naturally with the increases economic activity, economists will find many more opportunities to utilise their educational qualifications remuneratively.

3) English Literature

Duration: 3 years

Eligibility: 10+2, some colleges hold entrance tests

Job profile: Journalist, scriptwriter, English teacher, storyteller, freelance writer

Course overview: You will study a range of literature, from classics to modern novels, and poetry. Understanding their implied meanings is part important. Similes, metaphors and interpretations will be part of the course. If you don't enjoy reading, you will be in for a tough time. Your writing skills and reading of literature will widen your perspectives as you do the course.

Job opportunities: You can choose from a number of jobs, such as teaching, publishing, journalism, writing, advertising, research or translation. Becoming a scriptwriter or author is another possibility. Publishing houses also commission you to author books. You can become an English teacher or join the KPO and BPO industry.

4) Botany

Duration: 3 year

Eligibility: 10+2 in science

Course overview: A combination of theory and practicals, you will study ecology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, physiology and taxonomy.

Job opportunities: Some outdoors positions to consider include that of ecologist, taxonomist, conservationist, forester or plant explorer. A person with an inclination towards mathematics can opt for the field of biophysics, developmental botany, genetics or systems ecology. An interest in chemistry can provide you with the opportunity to become a plant biochemist, molecular biologist or plant physiologist. Biotechnology is a promising field to enter as well. One can also work in the field of Botanical Survey, Farm Management, eco-botany, floricultre/ horticulture, biotechnology.

5) Zoology

Duration: 3 years

Eligibility: 10+2 in science, other criteria vary from college to college. Some hold entrance exams as well.

Course overview: Study the whole arena of animals from behaviour to health and well-being of the animal. Practicals make you familiar with lab equipment, research techniques and computers.

Job opportunities: You can work as a research zoologist, conducting experiments on specific animals. Zoologists spend their time outdoors, as part of their course as well as their work life. Zoos absorb many trained individuals. Other opportunities include government, environmental consulting firms and conservation groups.

6) Political Science (Hons)

Duration: 3 years

Eligibility: 10+2 in Arts stream

Course overview: Theory is a major part of the course. You will delve deep into classical political philosophy, positivism, structuralism, poststructuralism, behaviouralism, realism and institutionalism. Research from primary sources such as historical documents and official records is required. You will study about Indian political thought, western political thought, public administration, Indian Foreign Policy, United Nation, etc.

Job opportunities: Political scientists can work as advisors to politicians or political parties. Working in government organisations or as a civil servant is a preferred choice. Some work in NGOs or political movements. Teaching, journalism, researchers are some other fields for students with a background in Political Science.

7) Psychology

Duration: 3 years

Eligibility: 10+2 in arts, cut off percentages vary from college to college

Course overview: The course is a combination of theory and practical throughout. The range of subjects include general psychology, statistics, systems, abnormal psychology and physiological psychology. In your third year, you would opt for a specialisation such as industrial psychology, child psychology or applied psychology.

Job opportunities: This depends on your area of specialisation. A student having done organisational behaviour can find jobs in industry and private companies. The other avenues include schools, NGOs, hospitals, HR companies, counsellors and teachers.

8) History Hons

Duration: 3 years

Eligibility: 10+2 preferable, cutoffs and eligibility vary from college to college.

Course overview: Your course will be a detailed study of the past. Pre-existing monuments and tracing the past will be part of the curriculum. Research programmes will be part of the programme which will include re-visiting historical scripts. Indian history- ancient, medieval and modern history, European History, world wars, etc will be part of your syllabus.

Job opportunities: Researcher, museum curator, records officer, epigraphist, teaching, work with the government, media, advertising, publishing, fashion or design.

    Sir, i cmpltd my 12 class in 2012, and securrd 92% in bfs from sciencestream. And this year , i gav an improvmnt exam of chem., now my bfs ge is 95, i want 2 knw, which clg can i get for doing eco hons from du. Is there any relaxatipn in %ge fr science students in eco hons or there is any disadvantage?? Pls reply at d earliest. Pls also compare eco hons with btexh electronics

    Respected sir/ma'am
    i've scored 74.6% in cbse board exam(english 85;maths 60;economics 71;business studies 70 and accountancy 87).
    i've scored 78.2% in this exam with english + best 3 subjects.i want to know that in which college of DU i can get admission for bcom hons/bcom.

    My doughter has complete her Graduation in Journalism and Mass Communication from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi during 2006-2009. After 01 year she is sitting idal, can u please advise for her further study, carrier & future. As I found lot of post graduate private collage available in Delhi.
