DU rejects NAAC accreditation, sets up Quality Assurance cell

The proposal of getting DU-affiliated colleges accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has been rejected by DELHI University’s Academic Council (AC). On the grounds that the accreditation of NAAC is too general and it would adversely affect some of the DU colleges, the DU’s Academic Council have decided to reject the NAAC accreditation.

The university has decided to set up its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)which would assess colleges on the similar parameters set by NAAC, but the university claims that the cell will not grade colleges as A, B and C, the procedure that is followed by NAAC. “If not NAAC, we still have to go for some other quality assurance. Universities across the world subscribe to accreditations as it helps them assess their strengths and weaknesses. The university’s internal cell will evaluate a college’s performance on the basis of certain set parameters,” informed Deepak Pental, vice-chancellor, DU.

B.Tech with MBA, a Dual Degree for DTU students from 2010

Starting from the academic year 2010-11, the new entrants at Delhi Technological University will be offered an additional one-year MBA course at the end of their BTech studies . In addition to the four-year BTech course, an MBA degree would enable the students to have a dual-degree with specialization in technology, knowledge or innovation.

The university, which was till recently a DU -affiliated college and was known as Delhi College of Engineering, is also planning additional infrastructure for expansion. It has already added new academic programmes and increased intake by 400 seats this year at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The dual-degree would be introduced from the 2010-11 academic session, whereby BTech students would be eligible to opt for the one-year MBA programme at the end of their third year. Based on their academic and professional performance (projects and summer trainings), students would be selected from across engineering disciplines for the MBA.

The full-time MBA degree which started this year from the Delhi School of Management of DTU is open to all students, including those from non-engineering background, and admission is based on Common Admission Test (CAT), group discussion and personal interview scores, the additional MBA programme is only for students who are pursuing BTech from DTU.

After that, they need to spend 2 more semesters in DU to get the MTech degree.

This arrangement is among the first of it’s kind and should spark a new ear for science and technology education in Delhi University.

DCE Upgrades to DTU (Delhi Technical University)

In a bid to enhance both the quality of teaching and the syllabus, the Delhi College of Engineering has upgraded it self to an autonomous university – the DTU. The move is expected to positively impact the status of the college as a reputed institute, with cutting edge research and curriculum.

The vision behind the move is to transform the university to a world class technology university. The move starts with the introduction of 50 new PhD programs, 4 new BTech courses and 25 teaching/research fellowships.

A central idea behind the new programs is to reduce the gap between a graduating engineer and a professional engineer.

DU Students Get Exposure to Cutting Edge Research Workshops

In a bid to promote research among students and to encourage them for studies in Science, DU organized two workshops, in association with INMAS (Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences) & SSPL (Solid State Physics Laboratory).

The workshops were divided in to two parts – the first being a presentation on theory and the second being a practical session, with the students handling lab equipment.

The workshops gave students an opportunity to witness actual research techniques/processes in action – something that they only knew of at a theoretical level. They also got to attend lectures by Professors from JNU and IIT Delhi.

Quota: A Distorted Reality

Delhi university’s one of the eminent authority member spoke for something unimaginable and bewildering. S.K.Vij student’s Dean of DU talked about a blip in quota graphs of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College. Apparently Khalsa College happens to modify rules on its own without getting permission granted from DU. General Governing body meeting of College decided itself to give relaxation of 20% for students of Sikh Community. This happens to incur legal debates and discussing claus under the constitution or DU law. Quota for OBS Categories upto 21% or Armed Force personals upto 4% was recognised without such drastic relaxation of 20% in marks. But what is happening at Khalsa College is quite perplexing. Delhi University always had a set standard for providing education to all without such unprecedented biases.
DU has claimed if college authority will keep on acting in such fashion then DU will not recognise its students who will attain admission on these grounds. S.K.Vij also wrote a very strong letter of no violation of DU laws and he has stated …Violating these merit or admission set ups will mean that University of Delhi will not accomodate as well as not let these students sit for exams. To the surprise Khalsa College has not gained recognition from DU as a minority institute. Nor does Government of India has accepted its plea to make this College a minority institutes for Sikhs, under CEI ACT 2006. Quite bewildering a fact why there is concept of Christian Quota, Muslim Quota and now Sikh Quota where are we heading? Defining new boundaries does not mean narrowing possibilities or sabotarging rights of other eligible students. We have quota for OBC because we have recognised them as people who were neglected in the past as under priveledged and were not given recognition. Certainly its not about ‘minority status’, here the students of DU are aware of it. It is the means of claiming rights not marginalizing others.
